The Elora Singers open their 39th Choral Concert Series with a rare performance of a Path of Miracles, Joby Talbot’s powerful and moving a cappella choral work.
Path of Miracles invites the audience to participate in musical odyssey of the Camino de Santiago – the ancient pilgrimage route to the Cathedral of St James at Santiago, the final resting place of the body of Santo Iago (St. James). Each of its four movements focuses on one of the principal pilgrimage posts: Roncesvalles, where various French pathways meet to cross into Spain; Burgos, historic capital of Castile; León, dating from Roman times; and Santiago itself.
Mark Vuorinen, Elora Singers Artistic Director says, “This is one of the most extraordinary musical works I have encountered. Talbot’s Path of Miracles is a pilgrimage. It takes the listener, and indeed, the performer on a journey to beautiful scenic vistas, over musical mountains, through haunting valleys, amplifying the physical, mental and spiritual challenges of walking the Camino.”
A diverse and talented English composer, Talbot appeals to a wide range of genres. He has collaborated with rock bands, written opera and contemporary classical pieces and composed film and television scores The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005), Closed Circuit (2013), The League of Gentlemen and the hugely popular animated feature Sing (2016).
